I have been working in the school setting as a Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP- also known as- speech teacher, speech therapist, or "speechie") for 4 years.
What I do: I see students who are between the ages of 5 to 21. It is quite a challenge to work with such a wide variety of students, but it is a challenge I welcome! I see students who have difficulties in many areas such as oral-motor disorders (muscles of the face/mouth), articulation difficulties (saying sounds "incorrectly"), language difficulties (expressing and understanding), as well as working on things like pragmatic skills (conversational skills), short-term memory, grammar skills, vocabulary skills, you name it!
In addition to working in the school setting, I also work at nursing home facilities in the area. My work there is mainly with diet changes (food textures) as well as with memory/cognitive disorders and augmentative alternative communication (AAC).
Education: I earned my Bachelor's (Health Science) as well as my Master's Degree in Speech-Language Pathology at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. I had such a great experience at Duquesne. I was exposed to many different settings and types of work available for Speech-Language Pathologists. I ended up choosing to work in a school full-time and do PRN (as needed-hourly) work in the nursing homes.
I am blessed to work with those both "young and old". I am still learning new things everyday, and I try to attend as many continuing education courses, seminars, workshops and conferences as I can. It is SO important in the field of Speech-Language Pathology to continue life-long learning.
I would love to hear from you, whether you are a fellow speechie, teacher, student, or someone who is just dropping by! Feel free to leave me comments, follow me on twitter (@thespeechie), and email me if you have questions!
